Speculation about what features Windows 8 will include is sizzling as Microsoft continues to remain tight-lipped about details of the new operating system. However, Redmond has talked to some extent about the upcoming OS’ handling of Explorer, the Windows file management system. Posts on the Windows 8 blog indicate Explorer will have the ribbon GUI Microsoft Office users know — and, in some cases, hate. It will also let users mount VHD and ISO drives, possibly doing away with the need for optical storage media.

I’m not sure that we can say Apple is the barometer for the consumer tech industry, but it’s been either eerily prescient or a powerful catalyst in the demise of certain technological habits. Apple ditched the old 3.5-inch floppy drive back in the ’90s and followed up by creating the iPod, which brought attention to digital MP3 players and then dominated the mobile music space, even changing how people buy and consume songs. I can barely remember Sony WalkMan disc players now, and I can’t remember the last time I actually bought a CD that I had to fight to unwrap.

Hard disk drives have a tendency to fill up with all sorts of useless files. I try to keep up on the small stuff by using the trash often and frequently, but there’s always some large files lurking deep within the bowels of your Mac. And inevitably, I look at the bottom of a folder and realize I’ve got just 10 GB left of my 320 GB hard drive. I could certainly solve the problem, at least temporarily, by buying a new 7,200 RPM 500 GB MacBook SATA drive, but without paying attention, I’ll fill that one right up, too.

Lawmakers are moving to ban the use of computer laptops and other personal electronic devices in airline cockpits to prevent another incident like the Northwest Airlines plane that overshot Minneapolis by 150 miles. Sen. Byron Dorgan, chairman of the aviation subcommittee, said in an interview that his staff is working on a bill that he expects to introduce in about a week. He said he was surprised to learn after the Oct. 21 incident that the FAA doesn’t specifically prohibit pilots from using personal devices during flight except below 10,000 feet while the plane is taking off or landing.
