iVCD Turns Up Heat on Disc-Burning Features

Posted in: Technology News, Videos by admin on January 25, 2010

When Mireth Technology began business, the price of optical drives that could burn DVDs hovered around $1,000. That’s changed over the years, and so has the company’s flagship product, iVCD. Originally designed to create video CDs on a Mac, the application has evolved into an all-purpose DVD, VCD and SVCD authoring and burning program with support for a broad range of video formats — AVI, DIVX, WMV, MPEG, MOV, iMovie and QuickTime — and North American NTSC and European PAL standards.

StarTech.com’s new DisplayPort KVM Switch helped me solve a computing problem I did not realize I had. The company’s KVM Switch provides direct connections to monitors and computers without using a converter. The DisplayPort KVM Switch let me control two DisplayPort-capable computers with a single keyboard, mouse and monitor. The device’s
graphical and audio capability did not degrade the output from either computer system. Years ago when I first began using more than one computer, I relied on an A-B box to connect the two desktop machines to the same printer.

Software Appliances: Lean, Mean Deployment Machines

Posted in: Technology News by admin on December 23, 2009

Today’s enterprises are clamoring for software applications that run in a wide variety of environments — everything from physical to virtual to cloud. If you are a software vendor, how do you make it easy to give them what they want? You could hand customers your software on a CD and let them figure it out. However, in this environment, independent software vendors that find ways to help their customers get where they need to go earn big dividends in terms of market adoption and revenue.

Enter the Netbook Slayer

If you want to know why the netbook is headed to the endangered species list, take a look at Gateway’s new ultraportable. The handsome offering with the bland designation “EC 1437u” has power, performance and a small footprint, all for a very reasonable price of $549.99. When the notebook is pulled out in a crowd, its glossy, cherry-red shell is sure to evoke envious questions about its origins. Although larger than most netbooks, the Gateway model is still smaller than a clipboard, albeit thicker and heavier.

Lawmakers are moving to ban the use of computer laptops and other personal electronic devices in airline cockpits to prevent another incident like the Northwest Airlines plane that overshot Minneapolis by 150 miles. Sen. Byron Dorgan, chairman of the aviation subcommittee, said in an interview that his staff is working on a bill that he expects to introduce in about a week. He said he was surprised to learn after the Oct. 21 incident that the FAA doesn’t specifically prohibit pilots from using personal devices during flight except below 10,000 feet while the plane is taking off or landing.

One question that often plagues me is whether it’s worth upgrading an existing Apple notebook with more RAM and a new hard drive — or whether it’s a better option to simply buy a whole new one altogether. I tend to buy a new PowerBook, iBook, or MacBook every two years or so, and usually around the 16-month point, I’m in a quandary — I’m usually running out hard drive space, I’m running more applications at the same time than ever before, and now the new MacBook Pro models are fantastic but don’t seem quite worth the cost just yet.

HP Works Macs Into the Media Server Mix

Posted in: Technology News, Videos by admin on September 28, 2009

There’s more for Mac users to like in a pair of media servers unwrapped this month by HP. The new media servers, the MediaSmart EX590 and EX495, offer an array of new features aimed at Apple-using households. They can collect media from Macs on a home network. Media collection can be automated so as new photos, video or music are added to a Mac on the Net, they will be automatically copied to the server, where they can be viewed or heard, depending on access configuration, by any computer or device — like an iPod touch — connected to the network.
