If ever there was an announcement to get tongues wagging in the Linux blogosphere and beyond, it was the news that Adobe will stop developing Flash for mobile devices. That, of course, is just what was announced last week, and the wagging hasn’t stopped ever since. Dubbed “Story of the Week” on the Financial Times Tech Hub blog, the topic has been the focus of conversation on forums far and wide, not to mention the dominant topic of discussion in the Linux blogosphere’s own Mealy Apple cafe.

Windows 8 Jumps Onto the Metro Line

Microsoft inched further toward the tablet world Tuesday by revealing a slew of new details about its upcoming Windows 8 operating system at its Build developers conference, being held in Anaheim, Calif., through Friday. Windows Division President Steven Sinofsky headlined the presentation, which demoed various aspects of the new operating system. Among other things, Windows 8 will incorporate the Metro-style touch user interface familiar to Windows Phone 7 users. Also, Metro-style apps built for Windows 8 will be full-screen.

Big Mango Falls From HTC’s Tree

HTC has shown off its first two smartphones running Mango, Microsoft’s upcoming update for its Windows Phone mobile operating system. The new devices, the Titan and the Radar, are being shown to some consumers in London, Paris, Madrid and Berlin. The Titan has a 4.7-inch display — much larger than a typical smartphone’s display and more than 30 percent larger than the iPhone 4′s 3.5-inch screen. The Radar’s screen is smaller at 3.8 inches. At a time when so many smartphones look so much alike, a particularly large screen could make the Titan conspicuous to consumers, if nothing else.

Mozilla Targets Tablets With New Browser Designs

The Mozilla Foundation is enhancing the tablet version of its Firefox browser. It’s leveraging Android Honeycomb but retaining familiar visual elements of Firefox such as the signature big back button and distinctive tab shape, according to a blog post by Ian Barlow, who works on Mozilla’s mobile user experience team. Some of the UI elements that were tucked away on Firefox for smartphones to maximize screen space have been brought back in the version for tablets.

Reeling from the gap created in their lives by HP’s announcement Thursday that it’s ceasing work on webOS devices, webOS app developers have reportedly been swift to stagger into Microsoft’s arms. At least 500 webOS app devs responded to a call put out by Brandon Watson, Microsoft’s senior director of Windows Phone 7 development, within 22 hours, Watson tweeted Saturday.That’s good news for Microsoft. “It seems that Microsoft currently really lacks developers around its app ecosystem, which is why it’s so actively recruiting them,” said AppGeyser’s Estuardo Robles.

Microsoft Throws a Juicy Mango to Manufacturers

Mango, the largest update yet to Microsoft’s still-young Windows Phone 7 mobile OS, was released to manufacturers Tuesday in what the software company called an “important milestone” in its fight to gain some ground in the competitive smartphone marketplace. The update was first shown off in May and is being viewed as a dramatic upgrade from the basic Windows Phone 7 platform, released in 2010. Mango sports over 500 new features and has a much greater focus on apps and communication tasks now regularly performed on smartphones.

On the eve of the Electronic Entertainment Expo, Microsoft premiered a lineup of new games for the Xbox 360, including “Gears of War 3″ and “Forza Motorsport 4.” The company also debuted the trailer for “Halo 4″ and unveiled the next installment of “Fable,” by developer Peter Molyneux. In addition, Microsoft announced a new voice-based entertainment search tool. Voice search with Bing on Xbox 360 lets users search Netflix, Hulu Plus and ESPN. The tool can also be used to search music and video on the Xbox LIVE Marketplace.

Internet Explorer Flaw Lets Hackers Into the Cookie Jar

Italian security researcher Rosario Valotta has discovered a new way for hackers to steal their victims’ online credentials — stealing the session cookies from whatever site a victim is visiting. The stolen cookies can then be used to get victims’ computers to download malware, forge clicks or send messages, according to Valotta’s website. The attack, which Valotta dubbed “cookiejacking,” works on all versions of Internet Explorer across all versions of the Windows operating system, the researcher contends.

Google Whips Out an E-Wallet

Google officially unveiled its e-wallet Thursday in a presentation with its partners at an event in New York. Google executives demonstrated making purchases and downloading e-coupons with the e-wallet through a Google Nexus S Android smartphone. They added that eventually consumers might even store their drivers’ licenses in it. The Google Wallet is secure, Google representatives said, and the NFC chip in the smartphone will only be turned on when the consumer wants to actually use the e-wallet. This is meant to prevent hackers from “sniffing” the card and stealing information.

WinPho Developers Get a Bite of the Mango

Microsoft has rolled out app development tools for Mango, the Windows Phone 7 update about which the company released details earlier this week. Registered developers can download the Mango Beta Windows Phone Developer Tools from AppHub, Casey McGee, marketing manager for Windows Phone, told TechNewsWorld. McGee declined to say how many appdevs have downloaded these tools so far, but he pointed out that the package’s predecessor, Windows Phone Development Tools, have been downloaded “more than 1.5 million times.”

Seasoned Java or Android appdevs looking to create apps on Android 3.0, aka “Honeycomb,” will probably find it relatively easy to get up and running. “If you’re a Java developer, it’s going to take you three to five days to get to the point where you can be dangerous enough to develop apps,” Marko Gargenta, Android expert at Marakana told LinuxInsider. Application development on Honeycomb is “conceptually similar to development on the smartphone,” Gargenta added. “For somebody who’s familiar with Android, it may take him less than a day to get into all the intricacies.”

Microsoft on Monday announced the release of the Windows Phone Developer Tools beta; this was followed on Tuesday with the announcement of WinPho7 integration with the Windows Live and Zune services. The moves come as Microsoft works to consolidate its mobile efforts around the Windows Phone 7 platform and remain a player in the mobile phone market. The beta release is the near-final version of the tools needed for building applications and games for the WinPho 7 platform, Microsoft said.

A few weeks ago we heard some chitchat about a few Google engineers taking home a new kind of set-top box to tinker and play around with. Not a big surprise — Google guys tinker with everything. It’s like DARPA combined with Wonka Chocolate combined with Acme from the Looney Toons. But now we’re hearing a little more about it from a New York Times article. Google calls it “rumor and speculation” — nudge-nudge. Apparently Google is teaming up with Intel, Sony and Logitech to build a consumer set-top box platform for mixing TV with the Internet.

Microsoft has thrown the doors open to developers interested in working on the upcoming Windows Phone 7 Series platform, announcing new developer tools and offering the deepest look yet at the Silverlight-based architecture during keynote sessions Monday at the Mix10 conference in Las Vegas. The new tools include updates to Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Express, Expression Blend and XNA Game Studio. Microsoft also announced an emulator running as a virtual machine identical to the phone’s OS, as well as an update to Silverlight itself.

Microsoft Preps for Ginormous Patch Tuesday

Microsoft on Friday announced that it will issue a record 13 security bulletins on its next scheduled Patch Tuesday, which will arrive Oct. 13. It rates eight of these as critical and the rest as important. The bulletins address 34 vulnerabilities across a variety of Microsoft products, ranging from Windows to its Forefront security app to Internet Explorer. Ten of the 13 bulletins address flaws that enable remote code execution. Eight of these are ranked critical and the other two important.
