Dropbox Hits Biz Market With New ‘Teams’ Edition

Dropbox, a cloud service that lets users store and share documents and media files over any device, has introduced a paid version of its product aimed at businesses. Known as “Dropbox for Teams,” this comes with new administrative controls, centralized billing and phone support and, of course, more storage. It’s priced at $800 a year for five users and $125 for each additional user. Dropbox’s new paid service comes with 1 terabyte of storage for the first five users. Additional users get 200 GB each. To add or update files, users just save a document, photo or video to their Dropbox folder.

Adobe Aims to Keep Flash Shiny With New Version

Adobe on Wednesday announced its Flash Player 11 and Air 3 packages. These have a heavy focus on games and online video across multiple devices and platforms. Those platforms include Android, Apple iOS, BlackBerry Tablet OS, Mac OS X, Windows and connected TVs. Flash Player 11 and Air 3 let game publishers deliver console-quality 2D and 3D games over the Internet to PCs and many other devices, Adobe stated. This “is essentially a way to do 3D games within the Flash environment, which was very difficult to do before,” Lewis Ward, a research manager at IDC, told TechNewsWorld.

How NOT to Push a New Open Source License, Part 1

Bruce Perens recently introduced what he calls a “Covenant” open source license on behalf of Lexis-Nexis, owned by Reed Elsevier, aka “the scientific journal paywall people,” for one of Lexis-Nexis’ internal projects. It didn’t take long for readers on both slashdot and lwn to rip it apart. Of particular concern was the requirement that contributors assign their copyrights to Lexis-Nexis so that Lexis-Nexis would gain the exclusive right to commercialize the code. Contributors would only be able to use their own code under an AGPL license.

BlackBerry maker Research In Motion will likely introduce a new operating system along with a tablet PC, known informally as the “BlackPad,” when its developer conference opens on Monday in San Francisco. The BlackPad is expected to become available by the end of this year, perhaps as early as November. The industry’s eyes will be on RIM’s developer conference — and there are big expectations. “The market is waiting for something big and interesting,” said Aziti Arvani, principal of the Arvani Group.

Sparked by a recent Glyn Moody column on Heise Online, that’s the question bloggers have been wrestling with in recent days. On the one hand, we’ve got the fact that FOSS is generally free — a feature that tends to minimize the revenue-generating opportunities, at least at first glance. On the other hand, we have compelling evidence from companies like Red Hat that it is indeed possible to make money aplenty with free and open source software.

If a totalitarian regime uses Linux, does that mean Linux is an enemy of the state? That’s the mind-bending question of the day following some politically charged Linuxy news that emerged over the past few weeks. North Korea, it appears, has developed its own Linux-based operating system. With a strong similarity to the Windows user interface, Red Star even comes with a Readme file including quotes from North Korean leader Kim Jong-il about how important it is for the republic “to have its own Linux-based operating system compatible with Korean traditions.”
